AI receptionist pricing: what to compare
Quotes for AI phone answering can look very different from each other. The headline number rarely tells the whole story, so compare these items first.
How providers usually charge
- A monthly fee, sometimes with a set number of minutes
- A per-minute or per-call rate on top
- A one-time setup fee for writing the call flow and connections
- Extra charges for phone numbers, texting, or integrations
What to ask about setup
Who writes the call flow, and is it in your words? Who connects your calendar and inbox? How many rounds of test calls are included? A low monthly price with heavy do-it-yourself setup can cost you more in time than a higher price with setup done for you.
What to ask about usage
What happens when call volume spikes? Are there overage fees? Are spam calls and wrong numbers billed the same as real calls?
What to ask about the contract
Can you cancel monthly? What happens to your number and call logs if you leave? Is there a pilot period so you can test before committing?
Compare against the cost of missing calls
A price only makes sense next to what you lose now. Use our missed-call cost worksheet to estimate that, then compare it with written quotes from two or three providers.
Common questions
Is per-minute or flat pricing better?
Flat pricing is easier to budget. Per-minute pricing can be cheaper at low volume. Ask for an estimate based on your real call counts.
Should I pay for a pilot?
A short, fixed-scope pilot is a reasonable way to test. Make sure you know what success looks like before it starts.
